On Sunday, Central Texans honored Lady Bird Johnson, the first lady who worked to preserve the nation's environment. She is also remembered as "Environmental First Lady." President Johnson presented Lady Bird Johnson with 50 pens on July 26, 1968. The president used these pens to sign environmental bills. Inspired by her work, the visitors at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in South Austin made paper flowers, built seed packets and toured the wildflowers, the lady loved so much. Mrs.Johnson was the driving force behind the passage of "Lady Bird's Bill," or the Highway Beautification Act of 1965.
It's indeed very great that the lady is still remembered. The nations which do not forget their benefactors are bound to progress as these remembrances inspire others to follow the footsteps of their elders.
